The Ellyn W. Sammis Memorial Library

Ellyn W. Sammis   (1927 – 1998)

A native of Monroe, Wisconsin, Ellie graduated from Milwaukee-Downer College (Lawrence University) and obtained a Masters Degree from Radcliffe College.  She moved to Huntington in 1951 when she married Quentin Sammis. Throughout her 46 years in Huntington, Ellie selflessly devoted herself to the needs of the community.  She was a member of the Junior Welfare league, Family Service League of Suffolk County, and The Huntington Untied Fund (Town wide Fund) and eventually served as president of each of these organizations.  Her other volunteer activities included working at the Huntington Food Council and Thrift Shop, serving as a Trustee of the Long Island Youth Advisory Council, as a board member of St. Johnland Hospital, and as a docent at Conklin House.

In addition to her community involvement, Ellie was an active member of Old First Presbyterian Church where she served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, Youth Advisor, and Mission advocate.  She sang in the Sanctuary Choir.

Always an advocate for the education of children, she saw the need for an up-to-date library at Old First Church and with her bequest, this library, became a reality.

The church library contains over 1000 items for children and adults.  The library includes fiction and nonfiction books, as well as videos and other teaching materials.  To locate materials search the Ellyn W Sammis Library online through this link to Library World.

The library is overseen by a committee of volunteers who hope that the library will serve as a vital resource for our Sunday School teachers, and for the children and adult members of Old First Presbyterian Church. And we welcome new volunteers to the library committee – just let us know you are interested!
