Church School

christianeducation@oldfirstchurchhuntington.org

The Christian Education Committee currently has set up six church school classes (N2/3, preK/K, 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8). Use the Church School Registration form to register your child and e-mail the form to Christian Education or put it in their mailbox in the church school office.

Each class has three teachers and meets at least three times per month. Children come to the sanctuary for the Sunday Service and leave for church school after the Children’s Sermon.  First they all meet in one room for a brief service led by our three superintendents.  Announcements are made, birthdays are recognized, an offering is taken, and the Lord's Prayer is recited.  Then the students go to their classrooms for their lessons. Presently we are using a curriculum called “Witness” which is published by Augsburg Fortress.

Church school classes are dismissed at 11:10AM.  The bell rings to indicate the end of class.  Children should not be picked up before then because they will miss out on important instruction.

The third Sunday of each month we have a Family Service so our children remain in the sanctuary. At this service the children serve as greeters, ushers, and readers.

Mission Projects

Each year the children are involved in various mission projects, such as:

"Souper Bowl Sunday" – collecting canned or dry soups for the local Community Food Council

"A Mile of Pennies" - seeking donations of change to support the Sunday hot lunch provided by our sister church in Havana, Cuba.  Those who attend services there often travel several hours and are in need of a simple meal before they start the trip back home.

Greeting Cards - creating and sending/delivering cards to those who are ill or confined to their homes.

The Mitten Tree - collecting mittens/gloves to donate to local shelters.  This is done during the Christmas season.

The Heifer Project - raising funds to buy farm animals for poor villages around the world so they can help support themselves and their families.

Special Events

The Christmas Pageant is one of the highlights of the year for the children and for the congregation.  The pageant is held in Parish Hall and children of all ages participate in telling the story of Jesus’ birth.  It is a chance for the children to work together and to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.

Bible Sunday is a very important event that occurs each year.  On this Sunday our third graders receive a beautiful Bible inscribed with his/her name.  It is a very special day in the life of each child because they are given their own Bible to bring to church school, to read at home, and to use throughout their life.

Our annual Church School BBQ is usually held on the second Sunday of June after our worship service.  Family and church members join our  youngsters on our front lawn for food, fun, and fellowship.

From the middle of June until the second Sunday of September church school is provided for grades K-4.  The children report directly to a designated classroom at 10AM to participate in a lesson and a craft project followed by a snack.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

During the summer for five half days, a Vacation Bible School is offered for children in grades K-6.  It meets Monday through Friday, usually in August, from 9:30-noon.  The program includes songs, stories, crafts, games and snacks for the children.

Registration begins June 1st and parents need to submit a VBS Registration form with the per child fee to the Church office by the deadline. If you let us know you are able to help with VBS we will contact you about various ways you can be supportive.
