Some Key Theological Concepts to Presbyterians
Sovereignty
God is the majestic, holy God who creates, sustains, rules and redeems the world. God¶s providence is God¶s guidance and work in history and in the lives of individuals
Election
God chooses to save a people who will serve God and seek to carry out God¶s purposes in the world through lives of faithful obedience to Jesus Christ Also known as predestination We will look at this further
Covenant
God enters into a relationship with people: Israel in the Old Testament; the church in the New Testament. They are the people of God who proclaim and seek to order their lives by the word of God
Stewardship
The people of God manage God¶s gifts responsibly and seek to make proper use of the good gifts of God¶s creation
Sin
Humans are prone to idolatry, which is worshipping anything other than God, and tyranny by which the very fabric of life and relationships are broken.
Obedience
The people of God work for justice and social transformation as expressions of their obedience to God¶s Word and will in Christ
In Presbyterian Theology, some people adhere to strict Calvinism
TULIP T=Total Hereditary Depravity U=Unconditional Election L=Limited Atonement I=Irresistible Grace P=Perseverance of the Saints
Total Hereditary Depravity
At birth all people are depraved wholly and totally. They are in this sinful condition because they have inherited it from their parents
Unconditional Election
God, before the foundation of the world, arbitrarily chose to save some people and destroy others and nothing could be done to change God¶s sovereign decree
Limited Atonement
Christ died only for the ones God had unconditionally chosen to save
Irresistible Grace
An unregenerate person cannot voluntarily believe in God but once God determines to save him, that same individual cannot overcome or resist the power of God.
Perseverance of the Saints
Since people can do nothing but evil on their own, God¶s unconditional election is required to save them. Consequently, one needs to do nothing to remain saved.
