The Elders

session@oldfirstchurchhuntington.org

Elders are elected by the congregation to govern, nurture and oversee its worship, programs, ministries, mission and witness.     Each year six elders are elected by the congregation at the Annual meeting. They serve for three years and are eligible for reelection to a three year or less term. They attend worship regularly and assist in the celebration of the Sacraments.  An elder may be asked on occasion to attend a meeting of the Presbytery of Long Island.

Eighteen Elders serve on the Session in addition to the Pastor and Co-Pastor and Associate Pastors, if any. The Session is the church’s governing body and exercises spiritual and temporal leadership of the congregation.   The Session’s responsibilities are to plan, order and arrange all aspects of the church’s life. The Pastor of the church serves as the moderator of the session.  The clerk takes the minutes of session meetings including congregational meetings.

The following committees are set up to enable the members of the Session to fulfill their responsibilities.  The chairs can be contacted by email using these links or the directory on the Contact Us page.
