Last Sunday, one of the members pulled me aside and made a comment about Revelation which I found to be quite profound. He mentioned the beast coming out of the sea from the book, and commented that while it is normally associated with some sort of mythological beast, perhaps we can also understand it as the oil which continues to gush out of the ground into the ocean in the Gulf Of Mexico.
Now, while I certainly do not feel comfortable saying that the oil spill marks the beginning of the end of time, I think the reality of the matter is we are dealing with a beast. A beast that is destroying life in the Gulf, a beast that is ruining the livelihoods of people in the Gulf, as well as a beast that could spread all over the East Coast and perhaps the entire world. And what I find frightening is that no one seems to be able to stop it. Furthermore I think one can make a pretty convincing argument that what is behind this tragedy is really greed, a beast in itself.
So, I ask all of those who check this blog to please pray. Pray for the Gulf. Pray that the oil will stop gushing out.
